First-class care, wherever you live
Whatever they earn, wherever they are, South Australians enjoy one of the world's finest and fairest health-care systems, with access to first-class health professionals and medical facilities.
the Medicare system entitles all permanent resident Australians to free treatment as a public (Medicare) patient in a public hospital, and free or subsidised treatment by a doctor (including treatment by specialists), participating optometrists or dentists for specified services
- private health care is widely available and offered by some employers as part of salary packages
- both Adelaide and regional SA are well-supported with modern facilities for emergency and general care
- there are nine public hospitals in metropolitan Adelaide—seven of them major teaching hospitals—and 63 hospitals in country regions
- there are 25 private hospitals in the metropolitan area of Adelaide and nine in country regions
- in 2007, the State Government committed $3.4 billion to the State's public health system—including a new state-of-the-art $1.7 billion hospital
- Adelaide has some of Australia's—and in some cases the world's—leading research and treatment centres for illnesses such as skin cancer, craniofacial surgery and heart disease.
