English language programs for school children and students

little girl at child careNew Arrivals Program

The South Australian Department of Education and Childrens Services has a New Arrivals Program (NAP).

NAP centres are found in metropolitan and country areas, giving intensive English language support for students who are newly arrived in Australia, with a language and cultural background other than English.

To download a brochure in your language, visit the New Arrivals Program website.

Students who have been in Australia for less than 12 months (18 months for students in Reception and Year 1) are eligible to enrol in the New Arrivals Program.

During their time in the program, students are taught English for social interaction and cultural understandings, as well as English language literacy skills.

The New Arrivals Program provides the only opportunity for students to learn English intensively across areas of the curriculum, in relatively small classes. There are various support services available to students in NAP centres including Bilingual School Support Officers, Community Liaison Officers, School Counsellors and a Guidance Officer.

It is strongly recommended that, where possible, eligible new arrivals attend NAP centres.

Primary New Arrivals Programs

Newly arrived students of primary school age are catered for in small classes within designated mainstream schools. Classes are organised by age, and enrolment may take place from a student's 5th birthday at any time during the school year.

Classes are staffed by specially trained English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers, and students are taught all areas of study in English, in order to prepare them for exit to mainstream classes appropriate to their age and ability.

Whilst in the program, children are continuously assessed, and parents are advised when a student is ready to leave the program. Parents are also invited to discuss their child's future education and enrolment in the school of their choice. The mainstream teacher receives an exit report for each child.

Secondary New Arrivals Program

The Adelaide Secondary School of English is the only Department school that caters for newly-arrived ESL students between the ages of 12 and 18 years.

Students are assessed on enrolment and placed in classes according to their English language proficiency and their level of previous schooling. They are also placed in one of three learning pathways.

The Secondary New Arrivals Program provides a supportive learning environment, where students develop English language skills, as well as skills, understandings and attitudes for effective participation both in general secondary schooling and Australian society. Students follow an intensive English as a Second Language course across the required areas of study.
